The best time to visit North Topsail Beach: a month by month guide

The honest answer to "when should we come?" depends on what you want from the week. Warm ocean and full summer energy? Late June through August. Warm ocean without the crowds or the summer rates? September, no contest. A quiet reset with a fire table and a sweater? October through March. Here is how the year actually goes on the north end of Topsail Island.

March and April: the island wakes up

Air in the 60s and 70s, water still cold (mid 50s to low 60s), long empty beaches, and the best shelling of the year after winter storms. Spring break weeks fill early, but a midweek April stay is one of the best values on the calendar. Bring a fleece for the deck at night.

May: the sweet spot before summer

Water climbs into the upper 60s by Memorial Day, restaurants are open, and the beach is still mostly locals and early families. Sea turtle nesting begins, so keep deck lights off at night and fill in any holes you dig. Rates are still below peak.

June, July, and August: full summer

This is the classic Topsail week: water in the upper 70s to low 80s, warm nights, afternoon thunderstorms that clear in an hour, and every house on the island booked Saturday to Saturday. Our homes sit on a stretch with no public beach access nearby, so even in July the sand behind the house stays uncrowded. Book early: repeat families reserve their week before they leave, and July goes first.

September: the locals' favorite month

Ask anyone who lives here. The ocean is at its warmest of the year (often warmer than June), the schools are back in session, the restaurants have no wait, and the light turns gold. We watch the tropics, of course, and our policies spell out exactly what happens if a mandatory evacuation is ordered. For most families, September is the best week of the year at the best price.

October and November: fire table season

Air in the 60s and 70s, water in the upper 60s into early October, then cooling. Surf fishing is at its peak as the fall run comes through. Long walks, sweatshirts on the deck, and sunsets that come early enough for the kids to see. Thanksgiving week at the beach is a tradition for several of our families.

December through February: the quiet reset

Some days are 65 and sunny, some are 45 and gray. The island is nearly empty, the rates are the lowest of the year, and there is something restorative about a beach with nobody on it. Our homes have full heat, fast wifi, and smart TVs in every bedroom, so a rainy day is a cozy one. Weekend rates and shorter minimum stays apply in winter; ask us.

How far ahead to book

Peak summer weeks: six to nine months ahead. Shoulder season: two to three months, sooner for holiday weekends. Winter: a few weeks is usually fine. The homes that sleep 16 to 20 book earliest in every season, because reunions plan a year out.

Water temperature through the year

Because it comes up in every call: the ocean at North Topsail is in the mid 50s in February and March, reaches the mid 60s by mid May, climbs into the mid and upper 70s by July, peaks around 80 to 82 in August and early September, and holds above 70 through mid October most years. Late October and November slide through the 60s. The sandbar means the shallow water between the bar and the beach warms faster than the open ocean, so a May afternoon in the tidal pools is comfortable for kids weeks before the surf is.

Holiday weeks and what they are like

Memorial Day opens the season with the island only about half full, which makes it one of our favorite weekends. The Fourth of July is full summer, fireworks visible up and down the coast from the decks, and the one week we ask families to book the earliest. Labor Day is the last busy weekend, and the Tuesday after it the island empties almost overnight. Thanksgiving is a quiet tradition for several of our families: a turkey in a big kitchen, a walk on an empty beach, and a fire table after. Christmas and New Year's are the stillest weeks of the year here, and some of the most beautiful.

Sea turtles, shelling, and fishing by month

Sea turtle nests appear from mid May through August, and hatchlings crawl to the water from July into October, mostly at night. Shelling is best after winter and early spring storms, from January through April, and after any big blow in the fall. Surf fishing runs in two seasons: the spring, from April into June, and the fall run from mid September through November, which is the year's best. Dolphins are here every month, though you will see the most of them from the deck in late summer and early fall when the bait is thick.

If you can only come once

Come the second or third week of September. The water is as warm as it gets, the beach is as empty as it gets, the rates are lower than summer, and the light is the kind you will keep on your phone all winter. If your family is tied to a school calendar, come the last full week of June: the water has warmed, the afternoon storms have not quite started, and you will still get a week of full summer before the July crowds arrive on the rest of the island. Either way, book early. The oceanfront homes on the north end fill first because there are so few of them.
