People ask us what there is to do in North Topsail Beach, and we always give the same slightly unhelpful answer first: the beach. Not the beach as a category, but this beach, the quiet north end of Topsail Island, where there is almost no public access and the sand behind our homes stays open even in July. You can walk an hour at low tide and count the other families on one hand. That is the main event, and everything below is the supporting cast.
On the sand
Mornings belong to walkers and shell hunters; the tide leaves a fresh line of olive shells, augers, and the occasional sand dollar. Kids gravitate to the tidal pools that form late in the day, warm and ankle-deep, perfect for the under-five crowd. A sand bar sits 30 to 40 feet out along much of our stretch, which knocks the waves down and gives parents a calmer stretch of surf to watch over.
On the water
Kayak or paddleboard the sound side, where the water is flat and the marsh is full of herons and the occasional turtle. Surf fishing is genuinely good here (we wrote a whole guide to it), and charter boats run out of Sneads Ferry and Surf City for anyone who wants to chase king mackerel or just ride along.
Off the island
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City is the one thing we tell every family not to skip. Historic Wilmington is about an hour south for a rainy day: the USS North Carolina battleship, the riverwalk, and ice cream that justifies the drive. Sneads Ferry, five minutes over the bridge, is a real shrimping town with docks, seafood markets, and the best hush puppies in the county.
In the evening
Grill the catch, light the fire table, and get on the deck for the stars. There is no boardwalk here, and we love that: the nights are dark enough that the Milky Way shows up on a clear one. If you need one night out, the Oceans Edge restaurant at St. Regis has the view, and Surf City has the mini golf.
The truth about North Topsail is that the list is short on purpose. Families come back year after year not for the attractions but for the absence of them: unhurried days, uncrowded sand, and a week that feels twice as long as it is.
