Is Topsail Island dog friendly? Beach rules, leash laws, and where dogs play

Short answer: Topsail Island is one of the most dog friendly beach destinations in North Carolina, and the north end is the best of it. Long answer below, because the rules differ by town and nobody wants a citation on vacation.

The rules, town by town

In North Topsail Beach, dogs are welcome on the beach year-round on a leash. Surf City and Topsail Beach have their own ordinances with seasonal leash rules, so check the current town pages if you are ranging down-island. The universal rules everywhere: leash on, waste bags used, and never let a dog dig near the dunes or a marked turtle nest (nesting season runs May through August).

Why dogs love the north end

The same thing families love: room. With little public access, our stretch of sand is wide open for long leash-stretching walks, ball throwing at low tide, and first-ever ocean swims without an audience. Early morning and evening are the golden hours: cooler sand on the paws and the beach at its emptiest.

The practical stuff

Bring a long lead for the beach, a towel for the door, and remember the outdoor shower: every one of our beach houses has one, and a sandy dog considers it a water park. Summer sand gets genuinely hot by midday; if the back of your hand cannot rest on it, neither should their pads. There is a vet in Surf City and an emergency clinic in Jacksonville, about 25 minutes away. We have never needed the second one; you want the number anyway.

Where to stay with the dog

All four of our oceanfront beach houses welcome up to two dogs for an additional fee: God's Grace, Sea La Vie, and both sides of Up On The Roof. Every one has a private walkway to the sand and a gated deck that keeps the escape artists honest. The St. Regis condos do not allow pets, so if the dog is coming, you are a beach house family this year.
