Shelling and shark teeth on Topsail Island: when and where to look

Low tide, a winter storm, and a slow walk: the unglamorous secrets of coming home with a jar worth bragging about.

Topsail Island is quietly one of the better shelling beaches in North Carolina, and the north end is the best of it for one boring, wonderful reason: fewer people got there before you. Here is how our family fills the jar.

When to go

Low tide, full stop, and the hour on either side of it. The falling tide uncovers the shell line; the first walkers get the picks. After a storm or a hard northeast blow is the jackpot: rough water churns the bottom and throws up whelks, olives, and the big stuff. Winter and early spring beat summer for quality, which is one more argument for an off-season week.

What you will find

The everyday haul: olive shells (glossy, cylindrical, addictive to collect), augers, slipper shells, scotch bonnets if you are lucky (the North Carolina state shell), and whelks that kids will insist are conchs. Sand dollars show up on the flats at low tide; keep only the sun-bleached white ones, because the fuzzy brown ones are alive and need to stay.

Shark teeth: the black triangle game

Yes, they are here. Look where broken shell gravel collects: the scalloped pockets at the tide line. The trick is to stop scanning for teeth and start scanning for glossy black; a real tooth shines wet in a way black shell chips do not. Kids under ten are mysteriously better at this than adults, closer to the ground and unburdened by doubt.

House rules of the beach

Nothing living goes home: flip the shell, and if anything is inside, back it goes. Fill in your dig holes (turtle season makes this a real rule, not manners). And bring a mesh bag, not a plastic one; sand falls through and your haul rinses itself.

The best part is what the searching does to a morning: an hour goes by, heads down, waves running up your ankles, somebody yelping over a whelk. That is the vacation, right there in the swash.

Walk out your door at low tide

Every beach house has a private walkway to this exact shell line. First one down gets the scotch bonnet.
