Nobody staying on the quiet end goes out for every meal; the whole point of a well-stocked oceanfront kitchen is pancakes with an ocean view. But when you do go out, go where the locals go. This is our actual list, no ads, no affiliations, just where our family eats.
Sneads Ferry: five minutes, and the real thing
Cross the Highway 210 bridge and you are in a working shrimping town. Riverview Cafe has been feeding watermen since before any of us were born: fried shrimp, catfish, and hush puppies that end arguments. The seafood markets by the docks sell whatever came in that morning; buy shrimp by the pound, take it home, and your grill does the rest. This is the single best food move on a Topsail vacation and it costs less than a pizza night.
Surf City: the strip, curated
Fifteen minutes down-island, Surf City has the density. Our regulars: a breakfast spot for the biscuit crowd, tacos for beach-day lunches, and ice cream that justifies the drive with kids in the back seat begging. The pier is a fine excuse for a walk afterward.
The walk-to dinner
Oceans Edge sits on the top floor of building 2 at St. Regis Resort, which means guests in our condos can take an elevator to dinner and watch the ocean go pink over dessert. For beach house guests it is a five-minute drive. Either way it is the only white-tablecloth view on our end of the island, and it is a good one.
The nights you stay in
Every Sea La Vie Vacations kitchen comes actually stocked: real cookware, coffee makers (drip and Keurig both), spices, and a gas grill outside. The winning formula, tested across a decade of our own family suppers: Sneads Ferry shrimp, corn, whatever the farm stand had, and dinner on the deck while the kids make one last run to the sand.
